Vote Settings Documentation

Title

Sets title of the vote question. This is displayed as a link in the main site sidebar and homepage (for logged-in voters) and at the the top of voting pages.

Url

Set the 'unique resource location' (like a folder name for a webpage) the browser location bar “villagevote.org/voting/url-you-choose” The url field can only include lowercase letters, numbers, and dashes. Spaces and other special characters will cause the page not to load.

Description

Optionally add any necessary descriptive text or instructions for voters. The “Description” tab will disappear if this field is left blank. Content can be formatted using markdown.

Meta fields

Adds input fields to the form for adding options. Separate field names with a comma if there are multiple. (Available fields are: budget, youtube_video, language, geojson, additional_website, cost, audio, logo, image, video, certifications, rss_feed, location_accuracy, topic, postal_code, governance_model, mission_statement, map, longitude, latitude, location, recurrence, time, date, address, city, region, country, locationality, contact_person, keywords, email, website, phone)

Voter emails

People who can vote. Enter one email per line. If left blank, voting will be open to any registered user.

Scoring Method

Different scoring methods are recommended for optimal results with different types of voting behavior. To asses voting behavior view the Stats tab and look at the shape of the histogram graphs shown for each voter. Check if bar graphs show a smooth line or curve or more extreme voting where votes are set to maximum and minimum with little in between. The effect of different scoring methods can be previewed using the scoring method dropdown on the results tab.

Settings

  • sort-options-randomized (default): Randomizes order in which options are displayed instead of it being shown in the order in which options were submitted. (Recommended in most cases.)
  • sort-options-newest-first: Sort voting options by date submitted.
  • sort-options-new-and-popular-first: Sort voting options with new and hi-scoring options at the top. (Useful for recurring vote-decisions with many options and open result viewing)
  • user-metric-weights: Shows “Vote Weighting” tab, allowing users to vote on how much weight each metric carries in the result scoring.
  • hide-voter-usernames: Hides username of voters in “Results” page.
  • show-metric-descriptions-inline: Shows metric description above the corresponding slider for each option on the Vote page.
  • show-metric-descriptions-box: Shows description of each metric at the top left corner of the “Vote” page.
  • show-tags: Add tags to options to allow filtering.
  • show-result-number: Show #1 #2 etc. with options on the results page.
  • option-moderation: Sends email requesting approval of an option before it is displayed for others to vote on. (Only necessary if options are being added by the general public.) If enabled, the vote administrator must change the option's 'status' field from new to active
  • hide-long-option-descriptions: Collapse option description that are more than ~20 lines long and display a 'show more...' link to view the whole description.
  • limit-same-value-votes: Warn voters if they score too many options exactly the same value. (calculated as (1/5 + 1) of total possible number of votes). Does not (currently) actually prevent users from casting more identical votes, but encurages more nuanced voting by showing a warning message.
  • use-voting-sign-off: Show a dialog prompting voters to "sign off" when they have voted on all options. Prevents them from changing their votes and (optionally) allows them to view preliminary result scores.

Email all voters each time an option is added

If checked all registered voters will be notified via email each time a new option is added.

Status

  • open: Users can add new options, vote, and see results.
  • blind_until_complete: Users can add new options and vote, but cannot see results until they have voted on all options and signed off on their votes.
  • blind: Users can add new options and vote, but cannot see results.
  • closed: Users can see results, but cannot add new options or vote.
  • inactive: All tabs and options are hidden and a “Thanks for Voting” message is displayed.
If deadlines have been set for submissions or voting they will behave closed after the specified date(s).

Quorum

Percentage of registered voters that need to vote on an option for it to show up in results and be eligible to win.

Max number of options shown on results page

Limits how many options that meet quorum are displayed in the results. If left blank, all options that meet the quorum will be shown.

Result display format

  • grid: Results shown in grid of rectangular panels.
  • table: Results shown in tabulated form with columns showing the result of different scoring methods.
  • list: Results shown in list form.

Voting Display Mode

  • sequence: Drag and drop list where voters order the options according to their preference.
  • one-at-a-time: Options shown and voted on one at a time.
  • table: Options displayed in tabulated form.

Show comments

If checked a voter comments form and display area will be added for each option in the voting tab. Admin users will receive an email when comments are submitted. Comments are not displayed until admin approves of them.

Voters who have “signed off”

Shows ID number of every user that has signed off. Signed-off users cannot vote or add options. Delete the ID of an individual that has accidentally signed off to allow them to vote/add options again.
